Cemetery

The history of the Hardtner Cemetery in Hardtner, Kansas, is as follows:

  • Establishment: The first land for the cemetery was donated in 1912 by Mr. and Mrs. Ira Blackstock. Mrs. Blackstock was the daughter of Dr. John Hardtner, the landowner for whom the town was named.
  • First Burial: The first person buried at the cemetery was Mrs. Thomas (Adeline) Weller, in May 1912.
  • Early Years: From 1912 to 1920, the cemetery was simply a fenced-in pasture.
  • Formal Organization: The Hardtner Cemetery Association was organized in 1920 by 19 community members. Officers were elected, and the group collected a $1.00 assessment from each member. Community volunteers donated labor to clear the land, mow, and plant trees.
  • Expansion: The cemetery has been expanded over time, with four additions of land.
